The size of openings in walkway gratings may seem like a small issue, but it is particularly important in every application. It is crucial to choose the right pattern in outdoor walkway systems - failing to do so could have significant risks for workplace safety.
Depending on your industry, there are a number of factors to consider before a Webforge installation. Let's examine these considerations and which products will be most suited to different job sites.
Different spill hazards
One of the key reasons behind anti-slip measures is that materials used on the job can get on walkways, a risk factor for falls in the workplace. While walkway gratings are designed to reduce these hazards through openings in the platform, different grating patterns are needed based on the material in question.
The size of grating openings is an important consideration for a walkway installation.
In industries where workers handle liquids or smaller solid objects, walkways with smaller openings is an ideal choice. These provide greater traction and load-bearing capabilities while still allowing spilled material to fall through the grating. Webforge patterns A and B are an excellent all-round option, with a cross rod pitch of 100 mm and 50 mm, respectively. Both configurations have a load bar pitch of 30 mm.
These patterns work well in a number of installations, including chemical and wastewater treatment plants, power stations, refineries, and grain silos. For work sites where grease is a concern, serrations can be added to boost slip resistance.
In industries that must account for higher-volume-material spills, such as mines and quarries, Pattern F grating is a more suitable option. With a cross rod pitch of 50 mm and a load bar pitch of 60 mm, this configuration is specifically designed for these applications, and can be used as walkways in crusher buildings and transfer stations.
Weight capabilities and cost
When your site does not require heavy work, a lightweight grating pattern can be a more cost-effective investment. After all, an improperly configured walkway system in such an application will lead to higher costs for unnecessary load-bearing capacities.
Patterns C and D are particularly effective in these cases. With a load bar pitch of 40 mm and a cross rod pitch of 100 mm and 50 mm for Pattern C and D, respectively, these grating options are lighter than other grating options and easy to work with, while still meeting relevant industrial standards.
