Webforge New Zealand - Auckland SkylineWebforge NZ was established as a private company called WEBGRATING (P/Nth) LTD in 1970 that produced forge welded grating for the NZ market.

Several years later a hot dip galvanising plant was established to galvanise the grating and to provide a service to the local market. In 1978 Steel & tube NZ purchased the company and in turn sold it to Metro Industries in 1989.

Webforge New ZealandWebforge NZ is the sole producer of forge welded grating in New Zealand and over the years has been involved in providing product to almost all the projects requiring grating throughout New Zealand.

The galvanising plant services customers across both North and South Island and has developed a reputation based on service, short lead times and quality.

Galvanizing Plant

Webforge New Zealand's galvanising bath size 7.2m long x 1.3m wide x 2.4m deep (recommended maximum width of product 1.2m). Maximum lifting capacity 4 Tonnes.

Benefits

Galvanizing PlantHot dip galvanizing is lower in first cost than many common specified protective coatings for steel.

Even in the cases when the initial cost of hot dip galvanizing is higher than the alternative coatings, Hot dip galvanizing is almost invariably more cost effective in the long term because it lasts longer and needs less maintenance.

The life expectancy of Hot Dip Galvanizing coatings on typical structural members is far in excess of 50 years in most rural environments and 20-25 years plus in even severe urban and coastal exposure.

Galvanizing at Webforge (NZ) Ltd. Is carried out to the appropriate AS/NZ 4680 Standards for Hot Dip galvanizing. The Hot Dip Galvanizing coating has a unique metallurgical structure which gives outstanding resistance to mechanical damage in transport erection and service.

Process

Hot Dip GalvanizingGalvanizing is the practice of immersing oxide free iron or steel into molten zinc in order to form a zinc coating that metallurgically bonded to the iron or steel's surface.

The zinc coating protects the surface against corrosion by providing protection to the steel in two ways:

  • It shields the base metal from the atmosphere.
  • Because it is more electronegative than iron or steel, the zinc gives cathodic or sacrificial protection.

Even if the surface becomes scratched and. the base metal is exposed, the zinc is slowly consumed while the iron or steel remains protected from corrosion. The hot dip galvanizing process is adaptable to coating nearly all types of products such as tanks, sheets, strip, pipes and tubes, fittings, hardware, wire cloth, hollow ware, and structural assemblies.

All galvanizing consists of four fundamental steps:

  • Surface preparation
  • Prefluxing
  • Galvanising
  • Finishing

Preparation steps consist of cleaning and pickling operations that free the surface of dirt, grease, rust and scale.
The pre-flux step serves to dissolve any oxide that may have formed on the iron or steel surface after pickling and prevents further rust from forming.

Clean, oxide free work is galvanized by immersion in molten zinc.

Bath Size & Capabilities

Caustic Tank: For the stripping of most RHS & Pipe lacquer and degreasing 6m x 1.3m x 2.4m

Acid Tanks: Pickles product to ensure rust & mill scale is removed from products before the Galvanizing process.
4 tanks @ 6.1m x 1.3m x 2.4m
1 tank @ 9m x 1.3m x 1.6m

Zinc Bath (Kettle): NEW LONGER KETTLE
Bath temperature 455c
8.2m Long x 1.3m wide x 2.4m deep (note max product width 1.2m)

Chromatic Quench: Quench bath contains Sodium Di Chromatic solution, which protects product from oxidising before Galvanising has fully cured.
